Our tax rates are affected by many factors, including our worldwide earnings from various countries, changes in legislation and tax characteristics of our income. For the three and six months ended June 30, 2017, our effective income tax rates of 44.3% and 39.6%, respectively, were negatively impacted by losses in certain foreign jurisdictions where we receive no tax benefit due to 100% valuation allowances and by losses on sales of businesses, and the classification of certain assets as held for sale, for which we did not receive a full tax benefit. For the six months ended June 30, 2017, our effective income tax rate was positively impacted by excess tax benefits on employee share-based payments, the majority of which is typically recognized in the first quarter due to the timing of the vesting of awards.
For the three months ended June 30, 2016, our effective tax rate of 21.2% was positively impacted by the settlement of 2011 and 2012 income tax audits which included the recognition of certain previously unrecognized tax benefits of $23.4. For the six months ended June 30, 2016, our effective income tax rate of 14.6% was also positively impacted by the reversal of valuation allowances of $12.2 as a consequence of the disposition of certain businesses in Continental Europe, excess tax benefits on employee share-based payments and the recognition of previously unrecognized tax benefits as a result of a lapse in statute of limitations. The positive impacts to our tax rates were partially offset by losses in certain foreign jurisdictions where we receive no tax benefit due to 100% valuation allowances and by losses on sales of businesses for which we did not receive a full tax benefit.
